What is the Census?
- The census is a count of everyone living in the United States and is completed every 10 years.
- The next census is in 2010.
- The census will be mailed to City of Milwaukee households on March 15, 2010.
- April 1, 2010 is Census Day. While the survey can be completed as soon as it is received, Census Day is the date that every household should use when answering the census survey questions.
- April 1, 2010 is also the deadline for all households to complete and return 2010 census questionnaires.
- The census is mandated by the U. S. Constitution.
- Every person living in the City of Milwaukee should be counted in the census, regardless of citizen or non-citizen status.
- Participation in the census is required by law.
- It takes less than 10 minutes to complete.
- The census is administered by the U.S. Census Bureau.
- The U.S. Census Bureau respects privacy and confidentiality. Any information provided through the census survey is protected by Federal law and cannot be shared with any other government agency
- Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal government each year.
- Census data guide local decision-makers in planning where to build new hospitals, roads, schools and other community facilities. Log on to http://www.milwaukee.gov/2010census for complete details.
